As the mastering of numbers and letters is quite abstract, we teach the children chants that they can say to remember how to write the numbers/letters. We refer to bumps as bottoms and tummies and straight lines as standing lines and horizontal lines as sleepers.
1 – Straight Down, Straight Down all the way to Town
2 – My name is Mr. Two, I have a Big Fat Tummy and a nice long shoe.
3 – Two Fat Tummies that is me and my name is Mr. 3
4 – I could not find the door, and now my head is sore. I went from the top and did not stop, my name is Mr. Four
5 – I’m so skinny, I’m so skinny, I’m so fat, where is my hat?
6 – I’m a C, I’m a C, I”m a C…I see a B!
7 – Over and down, Over and down, 7 never makes me frown.
8 – I’m an S, I like to Skate, keep on going, I’m Mr. 8.
9 – I’m a balloon I’ll fly away, there’s a string, I guess I’ll stay.
A – Up the Mountain, Down the Mountain, BRIDGE!
M – Up the Mouniain, Down the Mountain, Up the Mountain DOWN!
F – One line down, then 2 little sleepers, nothing on the bottom, Jeepers Creepers!
H – Two standing lines and there’s eleven, add a bridge and it’s H for Heaven. OR “Hands can talk, yes it’s true, down, down bridge and it’s Hi to you!” (repeat)
K – One line down, arm up and big kick down! K for King in a shiny shiny crown.
I – One Big line , sleeper up, sleeper down, I for Insects all around.
T – One big standing and a sleeper on Top, Mr. T, just won’t Stop.
L- Straight line down and a little shoe, Mr. L says “I love you!”
E- Straight line down and one, two, three, Don’t you know it, it’s Mr. E.
U – Straight line down, and a little smile, UP, UP, UP higher and higher…
J- I look like a T, but that’s not True, add a little handle and the jokes on you!
G- I’m a C, I’m a C, I’m a C, add a little table, and now I’m a G!
S – Bottom and a Tummy, S so Funny!
C – Make a Circle, but you stop halfway, C for Fat Cat because he’ll make your day!
